You know when you're hidden away in your room, and all your family think you are studying hard, but in reality you're just trying to find a new series to invest your life in- Yeah? Don't Worry, I've got you! These are my current favorite series as of the beginning of 2018, which you should seriously get into...
You're welcome :)
You're welcome :)
1. Riverdale
OMG I'm literally getting excited about Riverdale just trying to find the pictures for this. As I type this now, series 2 has just come back after it's short mid-season break and I am currently awaiting Epidose 11. But seriously, I'm so excited I could literally type this entire paragraph in capitals... You just have to watch it! The series attracts both girls and boys with the drama, romance/ bromance, action and mystery all happening at once in the small town of Riverdale, and somehow a handful of the pupils of Riverdale High are in the midst of it all. It's also based on the Archie comic books, which just makes it that bit more clever. I can almost guarantee that you will be actually addicted to this show after the first episode; how could you not be, after the unexplained murder of one of the blossom twins... WATCH IT!!!!!!!!!!
2. Miranda
If you need a laugh, here it is! I can honestly say that the amount of times I have watched every individual episode of this show would have to be in double digits easily... possibly even triple. This show has long been my go- to and now that the 3rd series (which I completely forgot about for a while) is on Netflix, I'm just sorted really. Miranda Hart, the writer and main character is just brilliant and I really really hope/wish they would make another series- or even just one more episode, I'm willing to compromise! All of the Miranda characters' traits are exaggerated versions of all of us and those around us and I don't know anyone who has watched this and hasn't loved it.
3. Gavin & Stacey
I was introduced to Gavin and Stacey on Boxing day night just gone, and I watched the entire 3 series twice by New Years. It's just slapstick banter and drama, all put into a simple love narrative between Gavin and Stacey. The over-the-top characters of all of the family and friends surrounding the couple clash so well to make great humour, and respresent all of the family dramas. And it was made that much better when I found out that Smithy (James Cordon) and Nessa (Ruth Jones), the main characters' best friends, are the writers. This is just another of my favorite comedy series for when I need a bit of light-hearted banter!
4. Pretty Little Liars
I have a love/hate relationship with PLL, where it was absolutely fantastic building up to the "BIG reveal"/ "MASSIVE reveal"/ "UBER reveal", which turned out to be frankly NAFF reveals! And every time, all viewers fell into the trap in thinking that the next series reveal was going to make it all up, but it didn't. Whilst the first "A" was uncovered brilliantly and was so clever, the following series seemed like last minute decisions, where they tried to go with whatever fit, not what was planned all along like the writers claim. I am aware that I'm not really doing a great job of selling this series so far, but I guess why it's so high up on the list is because they kept me fixated for a solid 7 seasons of mystery and drama which was brilliant. If you haven't seen the show, I would definitely recommend watching at least the first season, because that one did set the benchmark high, and I just don't think the writers could match it. Having said that, if you do keep watching, most of the questions were answered pretty well in the later series even if the "A"'s were crap!
5. The Carrie Diaries
I think it was my sister who actually found this show but it was me who fell in love with it. Carrie Bradshaw is the glamorous nerdy character we all want to be, and is one of my aspirations when it comes to being a girl working in the big city- unfortunately I am nowhere near as successful with the glamour image. The gorgeous actress, Anna-Sophia Robb, can literally pull off anything and is the representation of all teens who rebel but still mean well, and as for her smoking hot crush... well! This is a really great series full of drama, romance and all other teen stuff, which seems to have flown under the radar a bit but it definitely deserves more recognition...
6. Call The Midwife
This show returning for yet another series, has to have made my January bearable. With the amazing acting and brilliantly accurate representation of history, this is undoubtedly one of the cleverest series and continues to entertain with a different story every episode. Everything from the duties and responsibilities of the midwives, nurses and sisters, to the costuming and setting, is absolutely exquisite. I always look forward to sitting down with my parents of a Sunday evening with a lovely herbal tea to watch.
7. Dance Moms
Oh gosh, this is one of my guilty pleasures! I have been addicted to Dance Moms for ages, and even though I have watched every series a number of times, I am always finding new episodes that I somehow missed. With each episode you root for the girls to win and laugh at the Mom's comments and their frustrations. The girls are just so admiral and it's always been a wonder how they fit in school, filming and their insane dance schedule. This is one of those shows which you just can't get enough of, and luckily there are 7 seasons each with up to 26 episodes, so there’s plenty to go round. And if you haven’t had enough after all of that, all the girls are teens now and have social media documenting all their latest adventures after leaving the ALDC. If you're really stuck for a light- hearted, guilty pleasure, this is your solution!
8. Skins
I only began watching Skins in an A-Level Media Studies class, where we had to watch the first 10 minutes of the first episode over and over and over again to analyse it. We seriously watched the same bit at least 20 times, then had to do some more for homework. Even though by the time I had finished my work, I could actually have acted out the entire clip and was therefore sick of it, I let the episode continue playing and began to like it. The honesty of society represented by the brilliant acting, makes the characters feel so real and you really feel like you are a part of their messed up friendship groups. The way in which the characters grow up and the series is passed down to the next generation is, once again, done so cleverly and you fall in love with the new characters all over again, each so layered and with their own story to tell. A classic teen series (also now on Netflix)!
9. Stranger Things
I think that with Stranger Things, if I had read the description first, I would never have watched it as it really isn’t my thing. Sci-fi and kids who I can’t really relate to doesn’t exactly draw me in. Yet, I was addicted from episode 1 to the mystery of the disappearance of a young boy in the village which seems rather fishy, and then the boys science nerd friends who get involved. Not to mention a girl who doesn’t speak turning up and the audience witnessing an innocent love beginning to blossom between her and the main boy. After rewatching season 1, I have found so much that I missed out on which was so cleverly done and I am definitely glad I clicked to watch ep1 when I did.
10. The Secret Life Of The American Teenager
Welcome to another of my guilty pleasures, uh oh! TSLOTAT is another of those light hearted teen dramas (beginning to see a pattern?!) where each character is an exaggerated version of all of the high school cliques, who clash when brought together. There’s the slutty mean girl, who somehow ends up best friends with the devout Christian girl, and the bad boy who gets involved with the band geek. If you need to have something to stick on in the background and fall in love with the characters, there’s 5 seasons just waiting for you.
